Wrist Support and Lifting Straps

Wrist support in three builds. Elastic for a firm, adjustable hold under a heavy barbell, fabric for a softer wrap you can leave on across a session, and lifting straps for when it is your grip that fails rather than your wrist.

About these

Elastic, fabric or straps

Elastic wraps pull tight and hold the wrist stiff, which is what you want under a heavy press, jerk or snatch. Fabric wraps are softer and more forgiving, which suits a long session where you would rather not keep loosening and retightening. Lifting straps do a different job entirely: they wrap the bar and hold it for you, so a deadlift or a row is limited by your back rather than your fingers.

Fabric, cloth and cotton are the same thing

People use the three words interchangeably and it causes confusion. They all describe a wrap with almost no stretch in it. The support is whatever the material gives you, and it does not change no matter how hard you pull. Elastic is the one that behaves differently, because the tension is yours to set.

When to reach for them

Wrists take the load in front rack positions, overhead lifts, handstand work and heavy pressing. A wrap earns its place when the bar starts bending the wrist back. It is not something to wear all session out of habit, because the joint still needs to do its own work.

Straps are not for the rig

Pull-ups, toes-to-bar and muscle-ups need grips, not straps. A strap you cannot get out of quickly has no place on a bar. Straps are for deadlifts, rows, shrugs and carries.

Common questions

Elastic for heavy pressing, jerks and snatches, where you want the wrist held firm. Fabric for longer sessions where comfort matters more than stiffness. Both are adjustable, so it comes down to how much restriction you want.

Tight enough that the wrist cannot bend back under load, loose enough that your hand does not go numb. Most people tighten them for the working sets and loosen them in between rather than wearing them tight for an hour.

They can. A wrap limits how far the wrist extends, which takes some strain out of a front rack or an overhead position. It does not fix mobility though. If the rack is uncomfortable because of a shoulder or lat restriction, the wrap is treating the symptom.
